A 27 anni dall’apertura dell’Hotel leggendario Sukhothai Bangkok si inaugura un nuovo capitolo nella sua illustre storia con l’apertura dellaa Club Wing, appena completata, una nuova ala dell’hotel dedicata ai servizi top, ristrutturata dall’architetto americano Ed Tuttle.
Tuttle, formatosi in Asia dove ha lavorato per molte catene top class di accomodation di lusso, trova la sua massima espressione nei progetti alberghieri. E quindi al Sukhothai che è uno dei simboli stessi dell’arte del ricevimento thailandese, ha inaugurato la prima fase di un restauro espansivo e multifase dell’hotel iconico che in passato ha ricevuto molti elogi e riconoscimenti per il suo fascino architettonico discreto, l’eleganza tailandese senza tempo e il servizio cortese.
Il nuovo club del Sukhothai, infatti, vuole esprimere affinatezza tailandese tradizionale e stile contemporaneo di gran classe.
Il lussuoso Club Wing comprende 33 camere e suite nuovissime, un Club Lounge al 6 ° piano, un nuovo centro fitness high-tech nel seminterrato, una piscina rinnovata con cabine ben arredate e il pluripremiato Ristorante italiano La Scala che ha subito anche un ampio restyling di sei mesi. Con la trasformazione dell’ala Terrace nel lussuoso Club Wing, ora si avvia il ripensamento del resto dell’hotel e degli interni delle camere dell’ala principale nei prossimi anni.
Questo nuovo Club Wing è realizzato in stile residenziale e trasuda stile e glamour, con un servizio personale con colazione deluxe, rinfreschi per tutto il giorno, antipasti serali e open bar. PROGETTO – Il nuovo place-to-be dell’accomodation di lusso thailandese è stato disegnato e realizzato dall’architetto e designer d’interni americano Edward Tuttle, che originariamente progettò The Sukhothai Bangkok, ed è stato nominato uno dei “Top 100 Architects in the World” di Architectural Digest. Il suo altro grande lavoro comprende i resort Aman in tutto il mondo e le proprietà Hyatt come il Park Hyatt di Milano. La sua preferenza per le linee pulite e semplici e il suo uso eclettico di materiali da costruzione riflettono una sensibilità estetica e originalità che spesso contraddistinguono le sue opere come classici architettonici senza tempo.
Combinando lo stile contemporaneo con l’essenza del fascino del vecchio mondo, il Sukhothai Bangkok riprende lo splendore di un’epoca passata con il mantenimento di edifici a padiglione di pochi piani situati all’interno di sei acri di giardini tropicali con laghetti di loto.
Il design degli interni rispecchia lo stile reale tailandese e incorpora ricchi tessuti in seta, pannelli in legno di teak e dettagli in marmo. Offre anche una selezione di ristoranti e bar di classe mondiale tra cui il Colonnade per la cucina internazionale e il famoso Sunday Brunch, lo Zuk Bar con le sue sale interne ed esterne, il rinomato ristorante italiano La Scala e il premiato ristorante Celadon, che serve piatti tradizionali cucina tailandese.
“Il Sukhothai abbraccia tutto ciò che è tailandese e una cosa che tutti amano è il design. Quindi, quando abbiamo deciso di ristrutturare l’hotel, non c’era una persona migliore di Ed Tuttle, che originariamente aveva progettato l’hotel per farlo“, afferma il direttore generale Thomas Schmitt-Glaeser, che supervisiona questo importante progetto oltre ai suoi compiti quotidiani di gestione dell’hotel.
Eleganza senza tempo e un tocco cosmopolita prendono spunto dall’antica capitale thailandese di Sukhothai, una città a 400 km a nord di Bangkok che ancora oggi custodisce le rovine del regno antico.
Le camere offrono un senso del luogo e un’eleganza contemporanea senza tempo con interni in teak lucido e dettagli impeccabili con tecnologia e comfort.
Nella sua visione iniziale per l’hotel, l’architetto e interior designer Ed Tuttle lo ha intriso dell’essenza dell’era Sukhothai del XIII secolo, creando un hotel contemporaneo che ha reso omaggio alla grazia, all’eleganza e al fascino di quella gloriosa epoca, eppure ha celebrato lo status di Bangkok come una città del mondo.
Ha fatto un uso generoso di teak, granito, specchi, vetro, ceramica, metallo e le migliori sete di Jim Thompson per evocare i palazzi salotti dell’antica capitale. L’architetto ha voluto anche elementi architettonici come l’acqua al centro, gli stupa, famosi monumenti buddhisti, i colonnati simmetrici e altre sculture in stile Sukhothai.
Il distacco col resto della proprietà non si avverte violento. Tuttle ha usato gli stessi materiali dell’iniziale progettazione: “Il brief di base era l’aggiornamento, ma anche uno stile evoluto radicato nel concetto di design originale”, spiega.
La nuova Club Wing aggiunge un’altra elegante dimensione alla tradizionale raffinatezza tailandese e allo stile contemporaneo di uno degli hotel più iconici della città.
Le 33 suite della nuova Club Wing sono generosamente spaziose, variano da 45 a 138 metri quadrati, alcune con ampie verande. Finestre a tutta lunghezza incorniciano le viste sulla città e la piscina sottostante. Ricche pareti rivestite di seta, caldi pavimenti in legno di teak e mobili, specchi e bagni rivestiti di marmo preservano il filo estetico della tradizione con la raffinatezza moderna che ha definito l’hotel per anni.
Tutte le camere e le suite combinano sottili sfumature tailandesi con tecnologia moderna e comfort supremo. I servizi in camera includono servizi igienici giapponesi high-tech, sistemi audio Harman Kardon, TV LED da 55 “, pannello di controllo digitale sul comodino, accessori Bottega Veneta, macchina da caffè Nespresso, biancheria da 400 fili, materassi Slumberland e menù di cuscini. Il Club Lounge, situato al sesto piano della nuova Club Wing, offre il massimo in termini di esclusività con una splendida vista sulla piscina. Inoltre, offre anche una sala riunioni privata per un massimo di sei persone.
La piscina esterna a sfioro lunga 25 metri che fronteggia l’edificio, è circondata da 12 capanne, ed è rivestita con tessere di mosaico blu e verde che riecheggiano la serenità dell’architettura Thai Palatial quando la luce si riflette su di loro.
Con i suoi soffitti a doppia altezza e le attrezzature all’avanguardia di Life Fitness, il nuovissimo spazioso centro fitness situato nel seminterrato è il luogo ideale per tonificare i muscoli, aumentare la resistenza e semplicemente mantenersi in salute. Le pareti video high-tech permettono agli ospiti di godere di rilassanti vedute dei giardini tropicali al di fuori di molte altre ambientazioni sceniche. Il centro fitness comprende anche una sala chiusa separata e un pro shop.

Legendary hotel The Sukhothai Bangkok will usher in a new chapter in its illustrious 27-year history when the newly completed Club Wing opens its doors to guests for the upcoming festive season. The wing is the first phase of an expansive and multi-phase restoration of the iconic hotel that in the past has won much praise and accolades for its understated architectural charm, timeless Thai elegance, and gracious service.
The luxurious Club Wing includes 33 brand-new rooms and suites, a Club Lounge on the 6th floor, a new high-tech Fitness Centre in the basement, a renovated swimming pool with well-appointed cabanas, and the multi-award-winning La Scala Italian restaurant that also underwent an extensive six-month makeover. With the transformation of the Terrace Wing into the luxurious Club Wing the stage is set for the restoration of the rest of the hotel and the Main Wing room interiors over the next few years.
“The Sukhothai embraces everything that is Thai and one thing everyone loves about it is the design. So when we decided to renovate the hotel there was no better person than Ed Tuttle, who originally designed the hotel to do it,” says General Manager Thomas Schmitt-Glaeser, who oversees this important project apart from his day-to-day tasks of running the hotel.
In his initial vision for the hotel, American architect and interior designer Ed Tuttle imbued it with the essence of the 13th century Sukhothai era, creating a contemporary hotel that paid homage to the grace, elegance and charm of that glorious age, yet celebrated Bangkok’s status as a world city. He made generous use of teak, granite, mirrors, glass, ceramics, metal and the finest Jim Thompsons silks to evoke the palatial salons of the ancient capital. He also included architectural elements such as reflections pools, stupas, symmetrical colonnades and other Sukhothai-style sculptures.
Tuttle used the same materials in his re-imagining of the hotel as he oversees the facelift. “The basic brief was to upgrade, but also come up with an evolved style rooted in the original design concept,” he explains.
The new Club Wing adds another elegant dimension to the traditional Thai refinement and immaculate contemporary style of one of the city’s most iconic hotels.
The 33 suites in the new Club Wing are a sumptuous blend of granite, wood, metal, mirror and silk, combined with elegant design and intricate detailing. Generously spacious they range in size from 45 to 138 square metres, with some featuring large verandahs. Full-length windows frame city views and the expanded swimming pool below. Rich silk-panelled walls, warm teakwood floors and furniture, mirrors, and marble-clad bathrooms preserve the aesthetic thread of tradition with modern sophistication that has defined the hotel for years.
All the rooms and suites combine subtle Thai nuances with modern technology and supreme comfort. In-room conveniences include high-tech Japanese toilets, Harman Kardon sound systems, a 55” LED television, digital bedside control panel, Bottega Veneta amenities, a Nespresso coffee machine, 400-threadcount linen, Slumberland mattresses, and a pillow menu. Club Wing guests also enjoy in-room check in when they arrive.
The Club Lounge located on the sixth floor of the new Club Wing offers the ultimate in exclusivity with impressive views of the swimming pool. One of the largest in the city it allows guests to enjoy an a la carte breakfast, afternoon tea, or sip signature cocktails at the private bar. Additionally, it also offers a private meeting room for up to six persons.
The 25-metre long infinity-edged outdoor pool fronting the building, is surrounded by 12 cabanas, and is lined with blue and green mosaic tiles that echo the serenity of Thai Palatial architecture when the light reflects off them.
With its double height ceilings and state-of-the-art equipment from Life Fitness, the brand-new spacious fitness centre located in the basement is the perfect place to tone muscles, increase stamina and just keep healthy. High-tech video walls allow guests to enjoy relaxing views of the tropical gardens outside among many other scenic settings. The fitness centre also includes a separate enclosed room for spinning, and a pro shop.
Last year, La Scala, the award-winning Italian restaurant located in the same building, returned to the city’s dining centre stage after an extensive renovation. Drawing inspiration from its namesake the grand La Scala Opera Theatre in Milan, the concept for the new La Scala was the “The Great Theatre for Marvelous Moments”, where extraordinary moments engage patrons in a full sensory experience of cuisine, design, glamour and service. This year the restaurant was the only one in Thailand to be awarded 3 Forks by the Gambero Rosso Guide as one of best Italian restaurants outside of Italy.
The addition of the new Club Wing combined with the famed Sukhothai hospitality, now heralds a new era for this city icon.
